Holiday Book Review!

Nov 30, 2020 | Caregiver Inspiration | 0 comments

The holidays are fast approaching and this year more than ever seems like the perfect year to gift books to those we love. Since we are staying at home so much and needing respite, what better anecdote could we find than a good book to curl up with!

I was blessed with a Nana who loved to read and she kindly introduced me to the library and the enchantment of books. They are saving me this year!

This collection of new finds, as always, is diverse and full of wonder. I’ve added more than my usual three to give you lots of options! I’ve also included a beautiful journal designed especially for self-care!

Journaling

Keeping a journal can be life-saving and changing. Everyone can benefit from jotting down those thoughts that swirl around our heads. Elizabeth B. Miller, Founder of  Happy Healthy Caregiver, has created Just for You: A Daily Self-Care Journal that is chock full of thoughtful and inspiring daily questions that will help you write and wonder and get your day off to a great start. Fun-filled self-care lists, games, and thought-provoking prompts make this a must-have source of comfort, relief, and creativity. This could be the perfect gift for yourself or someone you love.

Healing

You Were Not Born To Suffer: Overcome Fear, Insecurity and Depression and Love Yourself Back To Happiness, Confidence and Peace by Blake D. Bauer is an exciting road map to a better life and joyful soul. This is a simple, practical guide to living free of self-judgment, fear, and self-doubt. Having traveled a long journey of self-discovery himself, Blake shares his wisdom and hard-earned insight, guiding us with solutions and transformative actions. If you are ready for change and healing this book is the answer.

Navigating

Anyone who has faced the challenge of a hospital stay knows how unsettling, confusing, and frightening it can be. There can be so many unanswered questions and so much discomfort. The Informed Patient: A Complete Guide to a Hospital Stay by Karen A. Friedman MD and Sara L. Merwin MPH changes all of that. This is perhaps the most comprehensive guide about hospitals in existence. Covering issues from roommates to procedures and diet to tests, this handbook breaks down everything that happens and everyone involved. Easy to read and understand, this is the definitive handbook on hospital stays. Bravo!

Alzheimer’s and Children

Children are so often forgotten when we discuss the heartbreak that Alzheimer’s can cause. Although we are all deeply affected when someone we love has Alzheimer’s, children especially need to find comfort and support. They Love You No Matter What: Storybook and Activity Book for Children Impacted By Alzheimer’s Disease by Gregory Affsa is a lovingly written storybook and accompanying coloring and activity book that provides a wonderful way to help children cope with and understand Alzheimer’s and how it can affect those they love. The message is clear that Alzheimer’s and Dementia may change those we love but the love we have for each other never goes away.

Poetry

Erythra Thalassa, Brain Disrupted by Annette Libeskind Berkovits is a powerful collection of poems, written as a portrayal of a mother’s anguish after the sudden hemorrhagic stroke of her son Jeremy. We are taken on a journey of violent heartbreak, agony, hope, and faith. Within these poems, we find fear and rage, the celebration of life, and a deep expression of a mother’s love.

Enjoy these Holiday picks! I wish you and your loved ones healthy, happy, and joyful Holidays! Much love!
